The John Simon Guggenheim Foundation has awarded Prof. Janna Levin for her outstanding research and writing in theoretical physics and astronomy.
Levin is known for her popular science book How the Universe Got Its Spots, and her more recent fiction book A Madman Dreams of Turing Machines which garnered her PEN/Bingham Fellowship for Writers. Her research focuses on black holes, curved spacetime and strong probes of gravity.
According to its website, the Guggenheim Fellowship is "often characterized as 'midcareer' award ... intended for men and women who have already demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts.
