The last time I saw you
The last time I saw you
they let you out
and locked me in
Through a porthole
window with mesh
embedded in the glass
I watched you disappear
...
The last time I saw you
you gave me a good hug
You have lost
some weight
eating mostly bananas
and fruits
You still looked beautiful
and I gave you the
little animal charms
I said I felt you were
near
you touched my thigh
lightly and said
we are still close
...
The last time I saw you
we sat at Bazini's
outside
There was no Mr. Bazini
he was only Max
and he was not there
And you talked about
how we each carried with us
so much potential
each moment
and time
imposing its
linearity on
non-linear thoughts
You said you could
see all the
stars in Texas and
the same
moon which we all share
...
The last time I saw you
we had an impromptu date at
Cafe St. John
which reminded me
so much
of French bistros
The cathedral
outside will never
be finished in
our lifetimes
You showed me the
small bear charm
which you carried
with you
in your purse
and I was touched
Through the lacy
curtains we talked
lightly about death
and Jerzy Kosinski
found in his bathtub
and how you wanted
to do something
similar the
previous night
and how glad you
were that you
managed to ride it out
once more
You were sixteen
when you first tried
to swallow
all the pills
in your medicine
cabinet and they
made you so ill
...
The last time I saw you
you were wearing a
white
T and black shorts
and you looked
so fresh
with your hair
in a ponytail
and we sat on
the stoop
of 160 La Salle
and smoked
cigarettes and
talked
You had a plan
to be happy
and I was
still growing up
and we made a
pact to be each
other's lifelines
You said you
hated good-byes
...
The last time I saw you
I held back the tears
only long enough
until you were gone
...
The last time I saw you
I was writing these reflections
of you
for you
