Constraints on gas and metal flows from background quasars"

Star formation in galaxies is critically dependent on the amount of gas received from the inter-galactic medium, and on gas losses such as galactic outflows. I will describe the most recent observations on gas in- and out-flows using quasar-galaxy pairs observed with the VLTs and Keck telescopes. I will show results from the new MUSE instrument and discuss future prospects using such 3D imaging spectroscopy facility.
