David Helfand

Professor, Astronomy

Professor Helfand received his B.A. from Amherst College, M.S. in Physics, and his Ph.D. in Astronomy from the University of Massachusetts. He has also been a visiting scientist at the Danish Space Research institute and a Sackler Distinguished visiting astronomer at Cambridge. He has been a professor in both Physics and Astronomy and served for many years as the chair of the Department of Astronomy. He is also a past-president of the American Astronomical Society.
