Astro-ph 2

The idea:

While it is important to look through abstracts on astro-ph every day, no-one has time to actually read every paper. These meetings are an opportunity to learn about papers you may not have read from colleagues - to pool our collective expertise to understand the papers more deeply than we might individually be able to due to time (and brain-size) constraints!

In particular, these meetings are intended to provide an informal forum for the professional development of our junior members (grads and postdocs) to practice their presentation, interaction and listening skills in. (Well, everyone needs to practice these all the time anyway.) Participants should endeavor to keep these pedagogical aims in mind in presentations and discussions.

Practicalities:

* Thursdays 10:00am-10:45am on Zoom. See the announcement emails for the Zoom link or email [email protected]. (strictly starting/ending on time)
* Three papers will be presented (15 min each slot); presenters are asked to (i) provide a significant amount of context for those outside of the field; (ii) stop after 10 minutes to allow for discussion.
* The first draft schedule will be assembled from an initial participation list. Everyone is welcome to attend and present. If you have a conflict with your scheduled slot, you should try to swap with another speaker (and update the wiki) at an alternate time (or contact organizers for help).
* Presenters are asked to (preferably) choose a paper from those that have received a significant number of votes in the departmental vox charta, or a paper that they believe to be of general interest.
* Everyone is asked to vote on papers in vox-charta. A link to the departmental vox-charta should be included in the e-mails for astro-ph
* During the semester, suggestions for papers of interest can also be sent to the grad organizer. The grad organizer might also provide suggestions to all speakers and/or encourage thematic coordination.

* Mihir and Kathryn (the organizers) will bring laptop and keep time (at 10 and 15mins) - please self-assign another if they are absent
* Organizers will confirm assignments with presenters a week in advance
* Presenters are asked to pick out a paper at least 2 days in advance (by Tuesday evening) and post it on the wiki.
* Note - there is no requirement for others to read the listed papers in advance (although they certainly may!)
* The organizers should e-mail paper titles, authors and links one day in advance (Wednesday) and announce at Pizza lunch
* Organizers will handle time-keeping.
