Pupin 1402

Colloquium by David Helfand, Columbia

The building in which we now sit has been home to more Nobel Laureate students and faculty than any other building in the world. It has seen discoveries of the principles that underlie the technology of modern life, from medical imaging to laser communication to nuclear power. I will provide a brief history of the building itself, the experiments conducted herein, and the epochal events of 1938-1941 that spawned the Manhattan District. I will conclude with a capsule history of 249 years of Astronomy at Columbia.
