Come and minor in Astronomy!

September 04, 2025

The Astronomy minor is designed to replace the concentration the department previously had that allowed students to bring significant astronomy into their college experience without the points required for the full Astrophysics or Astronomy major.   The minor is designed for students who have a strong mathematics background, but does not require the extensive upper level physics courses required by the major.

Astronomy is intertwined with understanding physics, so the minor requires students have two semesters of calculus based physics in addition to the astronomy classes.  This requires the students have taken up to at least MATH UN1102 Calculus II as a prerequisite to the minor.   Beyond this math requirement, the minor requires the following 5 courses and approximately 15 points.

PHYS UN1401 and UN1402 OR PHYS UN1601 and UN1602  (1402 and 1602 require Math UN1102 Calculus II.  1602 has a coreq of Math UN1201.)
