Columbia Astronomy joins the LIGO Scientific Collaboration

February 06, 2026

Professor Maximiliano Isi's group has now officially joined the LIGO Scientific Collaboration, a global collaboration of over 1000 scientists dedicated to detecting and studying gravitational waves from black holes, neutron stars and other sources.

The LIGO Scientific Collaboration focuses on the National Science Foundation's LIGO detectors, but also works closely with the Virgo and KAGRA observatories in Europe and Japan, respectively.

Membership in the LIGO Scientific Collaboration will allow Columbia students and researchers to access LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA data and participate in ground breaking discoveries.
